How To Get An Acting Agent

By ,March 8, 2023

Hello there, aspiring actors! If you’re looking to kickstart your acting career, getting an agent is a great way to do it. An agent can help you land auditions, negotiate contracts, and provide guidance throughout your career. But how exactly do you go about getting an agent? Here are some tips to help you out.

1 – Build Your Resume

When it comes to building your acting resume, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, take classes in acting, voice, and movement to improve your skills. Participate in local theatre productions, student films, or indie productions to gain experience and add to your resume. You can also consider volunteering as an extra or background actor to get some on-set experience.

Make sure to include any relevant experience on your resume, such as lead roles, speaking parts, or any awards or recognitions you’ve received. You should also include your special skills, such as languages, accents, or any other unique talents you have.

2 – Research Agents

Researching agents can be a daunting task, but it’s important to find someone who is the right fit for you and your career goals. Start by looking online at agency websites or directories, and narrow down your search based on the type of acting you want to do (theatre, film, TV, commercials, etc.). Look for agents who represent actors who have a similar career path as you.

You can also ask other actors for recommendations or attend industry events to network with agents. Make sure to read reviews or testimonials about any agent you’re considering and check their reputation with industry organisations such as MEAA, AACTA or the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA).

3 – Build Your Materials

Having your materials in order is an important step in the process of getting an agent. Your resume should include any relevant experience you have, such as theater productions, film or television roles, and training you have received. Be sure to include any special skills you have, such as proficiency in a foreign language, musical ability, or martial arts training.

When it comes to your headshots, you want to make sure they are professional and of high quality. A professional headshot photographer can help you capture your unique look and personality. You’ll want to have a variety of shots that showcase your range, including close-ups, medium shots, and full body shots.

Your demo reel is also an important tool for getting an agent. It should include a variety of clips that showcase your acting abilities and range. If you’re just starting out and don’t have much material, you can create your own scenes or short films to add to your demo reel. Make sure your reel is well-edited and shows your best work.

In addition to your resume, headshots, and demo reel, you may also want to create a website or social media profiles that showcase your work and personality. This can give agents a better idea of who you are and what you have to offer.

Overall, taking the time to prepare your materials and make sure they are polished and ready to go will increase your chances of getting an agent and landing auditions.

4 – Reach Out To Agents

When reaching out to agents, it’s important to personalise your communication and follow their submission guidelines. This means doing research on each agent you are interested in, and tailoring your query letter to their specific interests and needs. You can find agents online, through networking events, or through referrals from other actors or industry professionals.

When submitting your materials, make sure to follow the agent’s specific submission guidelines. This may include sending your materials through a specific online portal or including specific information in your email subject line. Failure to follow submission guidelines can result in your materials being ignored, so it’s important to pay attention to these details.

If you have the opportunity to meet an agent in person, such as at a networking event or showcase, be sure to introduce yourself and express your interest in working with them. Keep your introduction brief and professional, and be sure to bring a business card or resume with you.

5 – Be Patient!

Getting an agent can be a long and difficult process, so it’s important to be patient and persistent. You may face rejection or not hear back from agents, but don’t get discouraged. Keep building your resume and improving your skills, and continue to reach out to agents who may be a good fit for you.

Remember that agents receive a large volume of submissions, and it can take time for them to review and respond to each one. It’s okay to follow up with agents after a few weeks, but don’t be pushy or aggressive. A simple email or phone call checking in on the status of your submission is usually sufficient.

In the meantime, continue to build your skills and network within the industry. Attend classes and workshops, participate in local theatre productions, and connect with other actors and industry professionals. Building relationships within the industry can often lead to new opportunities and connections.

Overall, getting an agent takes time and effort, but with persistence and hard work, you can find the right agent to help you take your career to the next level.
